The Internet arm of Cableuropa, ONO is Spain’s leading integrated Internet service provider. Under the ONO brand, the company offers telecommunications, television and Internet services to residential and business customers in franchises serving over 4 million homes and 300,000 businesses. Today ONO serves nearly 1 Million Internet subscribers nationwide.

Situation

The only country in Europe to mandate that its businesses run comprehensive Internet security systems and keep them up-to-date, Spain has long been a leader in the fight against malware and other online threats.

Despite these efforts however, Spain remains both a prolific source of harmful code and among the world’s top targets for its wrath. The last few years have seen a string of convictions on a variety of Internet crimes including spyware authoring and distribution, web lottery scams and most recently a Trojan virus distributed via peer-to-peer software that steals confidential banking information and hijacks webcams to monitor victims online. 

Steadily climbing in the ranks of Sophos’ ‘dirty dozen’ list of spam producing countries, Spain now stands in fifth place worldwide, producing nearly 6% of all spam, and is now tied for first place with Poland as the most infected network (Sophos). 

Response

Looking for way to respond to these threats, ONO went shopping for a security solution that could protect its subscribers with a comprehensive suite of security services including Anti-virus, Firewall and Anti-Spyware protection. Despite strong local security players, ONO looked beyond the Spanish market. They wanted a vendor with extensive international experience that could quickly and easily adapt the product for Spanish-speaking customers. They also wanted to work with a provider that would allow them the flexibility to brand the service to reinforce their strong position in the market.

A company with a large roster of ISP clients in North America and Europe, and experience localizing VAS for multiple languages and markets, Radialpoint was a perfect fit for ONO. Along with their expertise, Radialpoint offered ONO a full suite of private-labeled, value-added services including: Anti-Virus, Firewall, Anti-Spyware, Parental Control, Pop-Up and Ad Blocker, and Privacy Manager. The platform's service-oriented design would also provide ONO an effective way to deliver different combinations of services to their customers alongside their existing offerings, while integrating seamlessly with their business processes and infrastructure.

Results

In March 2005, a trial of Radialpoint's industry-leading managed security services -- including Firewall, Parental Control, Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, and Pop-Up Blocker -- was offered to ONO's Internet subscribers under the brand name Centinela ONO. Supported by a direct mail, email and online marketing campaign, the first phase of the launch attracted over 15,000 Internet users in one month to test out the services and enjoy a safer, more secure online experience. A large number of subscribers have transitioned to the paid services, with each taking an impressive average of three services. Radialpoint's Managed Services platform has ensured that ONO’s services are delivered and supported at a low cost.
